While there is no shortage of excellent books dealing with the history of the Christian church, this book seeks to contribute by giving a succinct survey of the spread of the Christian gospel from Pentecost to the present. The emphasis is on being succinct. Some of the surveys available are written as introductory textbooks. They will serve well in such a context, but they are too daunting for the average interested reader. It will take too long to go from the beginning to the end. Further, in all the details, the reader may lose sight of the overall picture. To use a familiar image, it will be difficult to see the forest because of the many trees. This book aims to be a “forest book,” looking at Church History from above so that it is possible to see how the pieces fit together and relate to one another.
